built of steel, the Ames Building is supported

by 9-foot thick masonry walls. The Roman-

esque style building was designed by Shepley,

Rutan, and Coolidge.

The Ames manufacturing company supplied

shovels to build Civil War fortifications and

the transcontinental railroad.
