the bathhouse was transferred to the Metropolitan

District Commission in 1949. The bathhouse experienced

limited public use with declining water quality and

was eventually closed in 1988. Major improvements in

water quality and this renovation have enabled a

return to the metropolitan beaches thereby reviving

a lost piece of South Boston's history.
